If you could have a fully computerized home, what would you want it to do?

Hi. I am a Computer Engineer. I want to build a new home that is fully computer automated. I want a list of ideas that I can implement in my new house. No idea is too far fetched or too silly. Sometimes silly ideas can lead to practical ideas.

Here is a list of things I want so far.

1) Solar panels so the electric bill isn’t so high, and backup generator in case of power outage, all linked to a central computer.

2) Video surveillance outside that is linked to inside monitor for communications at the front gate to identify visitors.

3) Auto lighted drive way, that turns on drive way lights as a car drives up, and then shuts them off when the car passes by them.

4) Universal RFID system tailored to each individual that lives in the house.

5) RFID recognition so that the front gate opens automatically when I get home.

6) RFID keys so that the front door automatically opens for anyone who has the correct RFID key. Door remains locked all the time and is completely automated.

7) Full video and audio system for communicating with other people in the entire house without having to leave the room you are in.

Fully automated blinds for windows that are linked to the HVAC thermostat so that temperature is maintained at the best possible comfort to cost ratio.

9) Zones that are taylored to each RFID so that temperature and lighting will auto change when someone enters the room.

10) Motion sensors on all interior doors for automated open and close.

11) Complete security system.

12) Automated blind and windows.

13) Fiber, ethernet, wireless in every room for personal computer communications.

14) Build in capacitive HD touch screens in walls and on several large surfaces. Like 4 feet wide by 8 feet wide. Very similar to the iPad now, just on a massive scale.

15) IPad apps to monitor the house and see real time data on what is going on in the house.

Okay that is all I can think of right now.

Come up with some cool ideas that you think would be neat to have in the home of the future.

Again, no idea is too silly. I can do all this stuff for really cheap, if I do it myself.

What to use in Paper Lanterns thats not a candle?

Hey Im going to hang some paper lanterns from my ceiling in my bedroom, but I dont want to put candles in them for safety reasons. I was just wondering what else i could put in them? I dont want to use LED lights that need a wall power supply, do you know of any mini LED solar powered lights I could put in the lanterns? Or any other ideas would be great. Links to where i can buy them would be great to, thanks x

Finding current of a solar cell from a lawn garden lantern?

I’m having trouble getting the current from a solar cell, taken out of the top of one of those cheap lawn lanterns. There are two wires coming off of it, and I can measure voltage. But I’m having trouble reading current or resistance. My multimeter just says "1". Could I assume that the cell’s current is the same as the battery it’s suppose to charge during the day?

I’m thinking, maybe, to read the current, I have to apply a load, as in something has to be using the power, with my multimeter broken into the circuit. If this is right, can you help me design a simple "load" circuit so that I can read the current my solar cell is producing? Maybe add a variable resister or something?

Can you easily reduce your energy use painlessly and at modest upfront cost?

The biggest bang for the buck is replacing incandescent lights with Compact fluorescent and/or LED
(The color is now much better on CFL’s and they have CFL dimmer bulbs. Use LED outside, they are incredibly low energy consumption but not the nicest color temperature to look at. If you have 20 light bulbs, on for many hours, just doing this could cut your bill in half.

Energy Efficient Appliances: Old Refrigerators, Old TV’s, Old Air Conditioners use a ton of power costing more over the long run than replacing them. The old refrigerator in the garage with a siz pack. Ouch. Costing a bundle. Better to get rid of it (sometimes your local power company will pick it up and pay you a rebate if you buy a new one. Get a used on on CL that’s newer. Keep your refrigerator full, The power comes from cycling on and off and when there’s cold food in there it stays cold longer and uses less power.

Home insulation. Attic insulation. Wall insulation. Floor insulation. Weatherizing doors and windows. Caulking drafts. Of course new windows are more efficient and there have been some rebates but the rebates are disappearing. Insulate!!! That’s not that expensive and pays back fast.

Plug TY’s and Stereos into power strips and turn them off when you’re not in the room. Turn lights off when you leave the room or get motion sensor switches to do that automatically.

Walk (better exercise than the gym)

Ride your bike (get some sunshine when you exercise)

Ride share (Spend more time with friends and co-workers in a relaxed environment and split cost of gas)

Use public transportation (that’s always and adventure in people watching and some buses hold bikes)

Make your next car Smaller, a Hybrid, a Chevy Volt

Solar Panels and Residential Wind turbines may cost less than you realize. Get a quote. Do some research on you tube and watch and hear others experiences to educate yourself. If you’re serious get 3 quotes.

Name some other ideas… this is a start…

What's the best way to remove old rusted screws?

I have a lantern light on a pole that no longer works and I purchased a solar-powered lantern, intending to replace the old light with it. Unfortunately, I can’t loosen the screws that hold the old light on the pole. I tried WD-40, but no luck. This is frustrating. The pole itself is heavy gauge steel or I’d saw it off with a hacksaw. I don’t want my neighbors to think I’m any odder than they already do.

Any solar guys out there?

I built a tiki hut, would like to have a solar powered flickering light INSIDE the tiki hut, I am going to install it in an old lantern….can’t find one anywhere. Any ideas on how to do this? If it is possible to do so, I would like to even have 3 lanterns like this…it is NOT to light up the tiki hut, its just a flickering light for decoration. I know I can buy some that you can charge in the sun and them bring them into the hut but would much rather prefer it to come on automatically if it can be done…..thank you….
